Calamitous Misfortune

Worst movie experience of my life! Went to see “Sweet Sweetback’s Badassss Song” tonight. Made during the early 1970’s, the film is basically a porno with a racial plot … and of course, I invited 10 people to join in the fun!!! I can just see my mother’s face as I write this … “you did what sarah?”

This guy from IES, Joe, invited some of us to see an obscure art film. It was supposed to be a mélange of French and Americans going, so I invited around 10 people to come. I read a short overview of the film. The plot sounded a bit racial, but otherwise not too bad. The day of the film arrives, everyone assembles and we all go to the theatre together. My friend Damien even invited a friend – an extremely nice, innocent type person. The opening scene is a child sex scene with real child actors (this gets my child prostitution blood pumping). In fact, the next 12 scenes are sex scenes. Damien’s friend begs him to leave after about 15 min. I don’t blame her, it was horrible. My heart sank. I invited all these people to a porno! I follow the two out the door offering my sincerest apologies. I wanted so badly to leave with them. The last thing I had wanted to do was offend anyone with graphic sex scenes. Awkward situation.

After the movie, we were pretty much all sick. If it wasn’t from the 2 hours of sex, it was from the endless desert scenes that alternated with the skin-to-skin stuff. We all merely went home. I walked with a heavy heart.

I wrote an email to Damien apologizing again for the film. I felt so terrible, more so for the friend than for anyone else. He wrote me back and said they after they left the cinema, they prayed for my friends and I. He makes me laugh. He ended the email with “does the word schismatic exist in English, because it would be most appropriate for you.” Oh, if only the world only knew ….
